Modern Hypnosis

The Father of Modern Hypnosis Says…(Part 1)

Hypnosis is a fascinating subject - don't you agree?

The mere mention of it gets people thinking and talking.

There is a fascination with the perceived 'power' of hypnosis due largely to the entertainment industry and the history of stage-hypnotism.

Have you ever stomped your way around a stage in front of hundreds of people because you 'believed' you were stepping on invading crabs from outer-space?

Ummm, yes - I have (can we keep it our secret?).

Way back in the 1980's. It was my earliest experience with a very good stage hypnotist working the Star Lounge on a cruise liner skimming around the warm waters of Fiji.

And it was all harmless fun.

Everybody Has A Hypnosis Story

I think we all know of at least somebody who has a story or knows of someone who was hypnotised on a cruise ship or at a local hall.

Stories about when they were made into a 'chicken with lips and no beak' or some other unusual behaviour while appearing to be under the total ‘spell’ of the stage hypnotist.

The stage 'subjects' are usually carefully screened beforehand for their potential as likely candidates because they can prove to be 'highly responsive to suggestion' via a few simple test exercises the hypnotist can carry out.

Heck - I WANTED to be hypnotised on that cruise liner.

Who Wants Hypnosis To Work?

And the person who wants hypnosis to work will almost always help the hypnotic process to success.

Make no mistake -- the stage-hypnotist is using very proven and legitimate hypnotic suggestions.

There IS hypnosis at play on stage - but the emphasis is on play and entertainment -- not therapy or self development.

And then there are the clinical hypnotherapists. The 'true' hypnotists.

These are professionals who (depending on your state or country) are more likely to be medically or para-medically trained, qualified and licensed professionals.

Dr. Milton H. Erickson

One such professional hypnotherapist was Dr Milton Erickson (1901 - 1980) a famous 20th century doctor.

Dr Erickson is, without argument, the father of many modern day hypnosis methods.

Erickson  was medically trained and went on to specialize in the field of psychiatry and psychotherapy in America.

Did you know that NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programing) has its roots in Erickson's hypnosis methods?

The early pioneers of NLP were Richard Bandler and John Grinder who met and studied Erickson, his transcripts and personal notes from actual clinical hypnosis sessions.

Bandler and Grinder went on to write best-seller books on NLP based on Ericksonian hypnosis.

And you may be wondering why this has anything to do with your self-development.

That Question

If you want the revealing answer to that question and more -- come back here next week and we will continue with Part Two of this two part post about ‘The Father of Hypnosis Says…’

Final thought -- one of my all-time favourite quotes from Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich

“What the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.”

Believe it!
