How to Deal with Negative People

Do you often find yourself around people who moan and complain about everything?

Perhaps you have a friend, work colleague or even someone in your family who thrives on misery?

If energy vampires are stealing your joy, here are effective ways to protect yourself...

# Be mindful of how you feel when you're around people. Be aware of who is being negative and having a moan whenever you see them. Notice where the negativity comes from and look for anything that is triggering their response. Some people just moan for the sake of moaning. Just make sure you're not attracting the negativity as a result of your own comments and actions. Once you are aware of where the negativity is coming from, you can do something about it.

# One way of diffusing the negativity is by not engaging in the conversation. Sometimes, it's best to say nothing or to lead the conversation in a positive direction. They'll either give up complaining or take their moaning elsewhere. Either way, a good result!

# Where necessary, try the direct approach. Just be polite and say you'd prefer to hear something positive. If they take offence, add that it's important for your well-being, reducing stress, or keeping your blood pressure healthy. It might inspire them to consider how their moaning is impacting their own health!

# Sometimes, you have to walk away from someone who is constantly projecting their negativity on to you. If this person is someone close (a member of your family, perhaps) and they simply don't understand the impact of their negative energy nor wish to change, just limit the time you are with them. You owe it to yourself to choose joy and to be with people who are happy and tend to focus on the positive things in life.
