Be a Discerning Listener

Many hours each day are spent listening to what other people have to say. Family, friends, colleagues, and neighbours voice their thoughts. Conversations from radio or television programs and popular YouTube videos are captured.

Every day, thousands of external ideas, emotions, aspirations and exasperations pass through your mind, potentially influencing your thoughts and actions.

So, when was the last time you listened to yourself? ...

In the midst of all the daily noise, your own little voice ... the one that usually knows best ... can be forgotten or lost. You might be so busy listening to and acting upon the thoughts of everyone else, that you easily lose sight of your own innate wisdom, beliefs, and happiness.

Of course, it's considerate and often important to listen to other people. Sometimes you learn something. Sometimes, your future can depend upon what someone else has to say. And, of course, being a good listener shows you are a caring and compassionate soul.

It's not good, however, if you're being bombarded with trivial, negative or controlling thoughts. It's not helpful if your positive energy is being zapped as a result of listening to other people's dramas. It's certainly not good if someone is using you as a junk yard to off-load their emotional trash.

Strike a balance. Learn to discern whether what you're listening to is impacting you on a positive or negative basis.

If what you're hearing is having a negative effect on your mood or is influencing you in a way that feels wrong or uncomfortable, simply step back. Politely excuse yourself from a negative conversation. Change the channel or switch off. You instinctively know when it's right to step away.

Don't have the confidence to do that? Perhaps the NLP Secret can help.

Remember, listen to your own voice. Be a discerning listener.

Life is too precious to waste, particularly on idle or destructive banter. So, what are you hearing today? What do you choose to give your attention to?

Today's quote:

“Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be” - George Sheehan
